I know it's basically about the actor's efforts under the director's decisions but there is no denying this change was made because of Love Never Dies, so that it would be more plausible. And as said, I think even Gerik is more threatening in that scene than Ramin in this anniversary filming. Well, that was the only stage version of STYDI that I could find to make my point, but I know I've seen more. He chases her around quite a bit and then screams at the top of his lungs. Watch this video and you're sure to see how fluffy and sane this Anniversary performance's Phantom was turned into.Īgain, "You try my patience!", he literally runs/leaps at Christine roaring at the top of his lungs. Even though he's too over the top with his body movements, this is my favourite Final Lair that I recall seeing when it comes to the stage show.

Actually he does that all through this scene but especially at that patience bit. Karrie throws in pretty much everything you could imagine a psychopath to be like. Loving the "You try my patience! Make your choice!" bit even more than Parano's portreyal. Unfortunately, I can't find the clip anymore. He gets more intense at the "You try my patience!" and does an insane thing with his tongue/face in the beginning when he dresses Christine up as the bride. > See here a few examples - something like these is how I'd wished they'd kept the Phantom, and had the awesome Ramin to portray:

In the Final Lair though, Ramin is somewhat more aggressive and colder than Gerik in the film.but still much less so than some of the earlier stage Phantoms I've enjoyed a bunch. I love Gerik from the 2004 film version but I don't want the stage Phantom, too to be so downplayed.Īctually, Ramin in this 25th Anniversary version is even more so if you compare the anniversary stage filming's unmasking after Music of the Night to the 2004 film's same scene, Gerard Butler acts more psychotic than Ramin does. But in this anniversary performance Ramin acts very downplayed, more scared and hurt than furious and aggressive. I want the Phantom to get mental at the I Remember/Stranger Than You Dreamt It unmasking scene and Final Lair. Seeing to how great Ramin Karimloo is in Love Never Dies at the point when the Phantom gets angry at Raoul and Madame Giry whom he suspects have "kidnapped" Gustave.I'd have absolutely loved to see such moments in this 25th Anniversary performance, too. And I think it's because of three crucial changes:ġ.) They made the Phantom a LOT less dangerous/insane. So, this filmed performance ended up less impressive than this original show usually has been.

It's not that, it's just that because of that sequel they've changed the characterizations in this original show too much. I don't want you to think that I'm saying this because I loath Love Never Dies. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this performance. The Phantom would've deserved much better than this for his 25th Anniversary.
